How to Become a CPR Instructor

Becoming a CPR Instructor involves a series of steps to ensure that you are well-prepared to teach life-saving skills effectively:

Step 1: Meet Prerequisite Requirements

Before enrolling in an Instructor course, ensure that you meet all the prerequisite requirements for the specific program area you wish to instruct. These requirements may vary depending on the course you choose.

Step 2: Participate in Blended Learning Format

Instructor courses are typically offered in a blended learning format, which includes:

- Self-Paced Online Introduction: Prior to attending the in-person portion of the course, you must successfully complete the online introduction to the program area. This online component provides foundational knowledge and sets the stage for the in-person training.

Step 3: Attend the In-Person Instructor Course

Participate in the in-person instructor course, where you will receive hands-on training and guidance to become a certified instructor. Successfully completing this course is a crucial step in your certification journey.

Step 4: Affiliation with Red Cross

Once certified, you must become affiliated with or become a Red Cross Training Provider. This involves signing an agreement to teach Red Cross courses, reporting the Red Cross courses you teach, and issuing certificates. Instructors can be employees or volunteers with the Red Cross.

Note: Certified instructors who are not affiliated are not permitted to teach Red Cross courses.

Step 5: Maintain Instructor Certification

Instructor certifications are typically valid for 2 years. Instructors may be required to maintain a basic level (provider) certification in the program area they teach.

To renew your instructor certification:

- Most instructors are required to complete an online recertification course.

- Instructors must teach a minimum number of courses, which varies depending on the program area.

- Lifeguarding instructors may be required to complete an in-person renewal course.

CPR Instructor Course Tests & Certificates:

Candidates who successfully pass the CPR Instructor course will receive their CPR Instructor certification on the same day. This certification recognizes your ability to teach life-saving CPR skills to others.

By following these steps, you can become a certified CPR Instructor and play a crucial role in educating individuals on how to respond effectively in emergencies. Your training and expertise can help save lives.
